SERENITY HOUSE

BRISTOL ALCOHOLISM RECOVERY SERVICE

Latest News: December 2009

Two big events raised funds for Serenity House in 2009

The first event was a bike ride from Land's End to St David's (600 miles via B roads) - which raised over £1000 - by David, an ex-offender in recovery from addiction. His life was transformed by the Recovery Dynamics programme and the time he spent at Serenity House, and he now works as a senior volunteer mentoring others at our Bristol Centre. You can still donate via David's page on Just Giving.

Back from the bike ride, David led our second major event - a Beatles Concert performed by Changing Tunes in support of Serenity House. A splendid time was guaranteed for all!

A new service at Serenity House

In consultation with our clients, Serenity House is set to expand its services. We are pleased to announce the start of our new aftercare package called Moving Forward, taking place each Thursday evening between 6.00 and 7.30pm at the Alma conference room. This new service as been made possible through the dedication of our Volunteers, both professionals and past clients. If you would like to attend please ring Peter on 07974 139 705 or the office on 0117 927 7839.

Recovery Dynamics® start date

We also wish to inform you that Monday 1 March 2010 is the start date for the next course of the Recovery Dynamics® treatment programme. Recovery Dynamics® is available to all in the community suffering from chemical dependency who want to get well. It is an excellent resource for all agencies working on behalf of others, such as the NHS, Magistrates, Probation Officers, Social Workers and for those managing the supported housing sector. Please ring the office on 0117 927 7839 if you have a referral.

Japan's hidden millions

Serenity House is now 'Big in Japan'. We were visited recently by Japanese academic Professor Sookja SUH from Niigata College of Nursing who has been on a fact-finding mission to the US and Europe on behalf of the Japanese Ministry of Health assessing various available models of treatment for addiction. Recovery Dynamics® features high on her list of treatment that works. In Japan they are waking up to the problem of chemical dependency in their midst with an estimated two million hidden sufferers with many of those women.

The Big (Olympics) Lottery

We are in the process of applying again to the Big Lottery and hope to be successful this time (and as one of Bristol's listed service providers we shall of course continue to appeal to our local statutory bodies for some help with funding).

Please support Serenity House and pass on the information of our new Recovery Dynamics® course starting Monday 1 March 2010. Remember, everybody knows somebody who needs help to escape from the grip of alcoholism.
